The original building was designed in the late 50s and finished in 1965, considered as one the finest examples of modernist architecture and one of the biggest Polish cinemas equipped with a screening room for over 600 viewers. The cinema is situated in the prestigious Koszutka district near the city centre of Katowice – the capital city of Silesia region. Till late 80’s Kosmos was famous for its crowded screenings of the latest international hits, the fashion has started with the premiere of the Beatles’ “Help” in 1965.
In the 90’s the owner – SILESIA FILM Institute – decided to start the renovation, financed by EU Funds and The Silesian Voivodship. After complete renovation the building was renew, expanded with the second screening room, equipped with DCI and Silesian Film Archive (first regional film archive in the country), changing the cinema into an art-house.
Nowadays Kosmos has restored former high-attendance both with the dozens of ongoing film initiatives and the careful selection of everyday repertoire. Thanks to the treasures collected in the Silesian Film Archive (FIAF member) every week there is at least one screening of classic films shown in the magnificent 35mm format. Among the most popular events there are the regular series of genre masterpieces screenings, Film Society “Ambasada”, monthly retrospectives of well-known directors or specific issue-related films, live opera and theatre transmissions, film history classes for different age groups (from primary school to college), senior, families and short films screenings.
