Croatia – Art-kino (Rijeka)

Croatia - Art-Kino (Rijeka) Croatia - Art-Kino (Rijeka)

Art-kino is located in the very centre of Rijeka, in the venue where the first film screening took place in 1928. After a period when all municipal cinemas were closed and screenings were organised only at multiplex cinemas, the City of Rijeka embarked upon an initiative to bring film back to the city centre.

Art-kino opened in December 2008 as a space for showing relevant films from predominantly domestic and European productions. It operates as a public arthouse cinema and cultural institution that shows valuable works, educates on film culture and promotes quality cinema within the local community and the wider region.

From the very beginning, Art-kino has organised an educational programme titled School at the Cinema, focusing on the development of film culture with children and youth, with an emphasis on European and Croatian film production. Since 2020, School at the Cinema has also an online edition of the programme.

To build a younger audience Art-kino is continuously developing innovative programmes like Kino Kustos – in which different public personalities and film experts present a film of their choice, Kultno kino – programme dedicated to valuable film classics that younger audiences have not had the opportunity to see on the big screen, screenings at unusual public locations, auteur film cycles (e.g. Wednesdays with Kieślowski), hosting selected programmes of various regional film festivals (e.g. Animafest, Motovun Film Festival, Zagreb Film Festival) and many other initiatives.

As a public arthouse cinema and cultural institution Art-kino pays special attention to diversity and quality of its programmes. A growing audience, positive reactions to films and educational programmes are indicators showing that interest and love for film are growing in Rijeka.
