Cinema for me is…
Glykeria in 11 frames
1. What film made you fall in love with cinema?
Chocolat by Claire Denis (FR, 1988). Never before have I seen a film so gently and so magically directed about the emotional cost of living by social and political norms.
2. What are the 3 best European films you have seen in the last year?
Aftersun (Charlotte Wells, GB, 2022)
A House Made of Splinters (Simon Lereng Wilmont, DK, 2022)
The Banshees of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh, GB, 2022)
3. What does Europe mean to you?
The ability of dreaming life in different places.
4. In 2024, I think it is important to vote in the European elections because:
We should not let anyone but ourselves decide for our future, our bodies and our lives.
5. What do you like the most about your country that makes it unique?
What makes Greece unique for me is the fact that even though it is a European country, it keeps its Balkan roots alive and whenever identities are mixed I feel that beauty is created.
6. Your favorite film theatre? What do you like about it?
In Greece we have a tradition of open air cinemas. It is something that I have not come across to such a large extent in my travels and I find it very special. My favorites are Ekran, Dexameni and Zefyros. Regarding indoor film theatres, I really love Mikrokosmos because it always takes care of the cinephiles.
7. What is your dream job in the film industry?
I would love to be able to write about characters with real lives, real stories and real environments that viewers can find something of themselves in.
8. Which film director would you like to be?
Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, First Cow, ..) is always the answer. Minimal, political and sensitive.
9. Which film character do you most identify with?
I think that at this point in my life I identify a lot with Charlotte from Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola, US, 2003).
10. Your favorite soundtrack or song?
If I could only listen to Alex Turner’s nineteen minute soundtrack to Submarine (Richard Ayoade, GB, 2010) for the rest of my life, I would do so with great pleasure.
11. If you had to live in a movie, which one would you like it to be?
I would happily live in one of Almodovar’s films (Volver, Todo sobre mi madre, …) because I love Andalucía like my second home.
