Elektriteater is an independent art-house cinema located in an old church building in Tartu – a university town with 100 000 inhabitants. The cinema has a single screen with 120 seats and together with the outdoor screen, which is used to host many film events all over Estonia during the summer, we have approximately 45 000 visitors per year.
Being the only art-house cinema in the city, we offer a diverse programme of different films with a special focus on European audiovisual content. In addition to our regular screenings, we organise retrospectives, thematic film days and small festivals. To make the cinema-going experience more special and personal, we often host screenings followed by meetings with filmmakers, moderated discussions about the topics of the film and so on.
During the past year we have put a special focus on developing film habits of younger audiences. Our first main goal was to welcome school classes to our cinema during the day, when there was no official programme in the screening hall. This has worked great, as we now collaborate with a lot of schools to host their classes here and give lectures about film education. We also have more films aimed at younger audiences in our programme now, so that the students who visit us during their school classes can find their way back to us in their free time as well. We try to make sure that everybody can find something they like from our programme and always give them a chance to discover something new.
