Cinema for me is…

Ioan in 23 frames

1. Describe yourself in ten words.
Film, sports, art, breakfast, craft, nostalgia, disco, persistence, ideation, futility.

2. Your best quality? Your worst habit?
Best quality: Curiosity killed the cat, right? That’s likely my way to go too.
Worst habit: Has to be overthinking stuff (I wonder if this is a good enough answer).

3. Your dream job?
Full time director, part time traveler and undercover artist.

4. What do you like most about your country?
The kindness of the people.

5. Your favorite dish in your country?
Fresh mushrooms stew with polenta and cheese.

6. Which word or phrase in your native language do you like the most and what does it mean?
Bătrânețe – haine grele / Old age – heavy clothes.

7. What European capital have you visited lately?
Lisbon.

8. Other than your own, which European country would you love to live in?
Portugal.

9. What does Europe mean to you? 3 values.
Liberté, égalité, multiculturalité.

10. What film made you fall in love with cinema?
Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1943, US).

11. Your favorite film theatre? What do you like about it?
Cinema Victoria. There’s a special atmosphere, a special feeling that embraces you as soon as you enter the theatre. The selection including many European films, the special programs meant to support the cinematic world, bringing the elder and the young together and the warmth of the personal are just a few of the many wonderful things this theater has to offer. The placement and the architecture of the building is just the cherry on top. You definitely have to visit us!

12. Who is your movie hero?
Leon, the professional.

13. Which movie director would you like to be?
Terrance Mallick.

14. Briefly describe your favorite scene.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides
By the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men
Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will
Shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness
For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children
And I will strike down upon thee
With great vengeance and furious anger
Those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers
And you will know my name is the Lord
When I lay my vengeance upon thee.

15. What are the 3 best European films you have seen in the last year?
Babardeala cu bucluc sau porno balamuc (Radu Jude, 2021, RO)
Io sono l’amore (Luca Guadagnino, 2009, IT)
La Belle Noiseuse (Jaques Rivette, 1991, FR)

16. Which film character do you most identify with?
Jesse from Before Trilogy (Richard Linklater, 1995, 2004, 2013, US) (but more like the stage where he became a writer and has miserably failed in his marriage).

17. Your favorite soundtrack or song?
My favorite soundtrack must be Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (Sergio Leone, 1966, IT) OST by Ennio Morricone.

18. If you had to live in a movie, which one would you like it to be?
Definitely Into the Wild (Sean Penn, 2007, US). Backpacking across the country, trying new stuff, seeing new places and just living life freely? Is there any room for doubt?.

19. Your life becomes a bio-pic. Who plays the role of you?
If I was going for the looks, maybe Cillian Murphy but the one who’s personality I think matches mine would be Ethan Hawke.

20. Which talent would you most like to have?
Paiting.

21. What is your most treasured possession?
My bike.

22. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Being able to finish this questionnaire before deadline.

23. What is your motto?
People who follow mottos are stupid.
