“NUMAX is a non-profit workers’ cooperative organization in Santiago de Compostela opened in 2015. It is a cultural project, created by an interdisciplinary team who joins up to build what we are today. We have a cinema (Cinema NUMAX), the only one in Galicia that shows films exclusively in their original language version. We also have a bookstore for literature, art and DVDs with over 6,000 titles (Libraría NUMAX), a video, web, graphic design and communication lab (NUMAX Lab) and an independent film distribution company (NUMAX Distribución).
Cinema NUMAX gathers arthouse films combined with avant-garde screenings and new restored copies of classic films.
Our first screening of Drifting Clouds (Aki Kaurismäki, 1996, FI), on 13 March 2015, was graced with a surprise visit from our much-admired Finnish film director and his wife Paula; for their immense generosity, support and affection we will never be able to thank them enough.
A little over two years since our opening, we are immensely grateful to the more than 1,000 subscribers to our loyalty schemes and to all the people who visit us every day and who have contributed to turning our modest space into a lively hub in the local cultural scene. In the first two years of our activity we have welcomed more than 70,000 viewers during about 3,000 screenings of more than 250 different movies.
We have also managed to set up NUMAX na Escola (an educational program oriented to high schools) and “A cor das palabras”, a steady programme of regular meetings with filmmakers and a masterclass that has recently brought many acclaimed filmmakers to NUMAX: Abbas Fahdel, Pedro Costa, Albert Serra, Rita Azevedo Gomes, Salomé Lamas, Oliver Laxe, Milagros Mumenthaler… We also host premiere screenings with the presence of directors (as José Luis Guerín, Jean-Charles Hue, Ado Arrieta, Carla Simón, Joao Salaviza, Sergei Loznitsa and others,…) and host and encourage collaborations with many film and music festivals in our region.
